Who needs Income Protection?

If something happened to you would you be able to survive on savings, or on sick pay from work? If not, you’ll need some other way to keep paying the bills and you might want to consider income protection insurance. It doesn’t matter whether or not you have children or other dependents – if illness would mean you couldn’t pay the bills, you should consider income protection insurance.

Income protection is an insurance policy that pays out if you’re unable to work because of injury or illness. Income protection usually pays out until retirement, death or your return to work, although short-term income protection policies, which last for one or two years, are also available at a lower cost.

Income protection payouts are usually based on a percentage of your earnings. You will generally be able to protect up to a maximum of 60-70% of your earnings, depending on the cover provider. The good news is that payments from income protection policies are made free of income tax. The reason for taking Income Protection is generally to ensure there is still enough income coming in to the household to maintain essential bill payments should you require a sustained period out of work due to ill health so it is important that the benefit amount provides enough income to achieve this.
